Win the day
Throughout our entire childhoods, we are told winning results in a trophy, a blue ribbon, or at least someone recognizing you won. That picture is the result of a CULMINATION of winning. The person who took that first place trophy worked day in and day out to get there. It was not about winning that final day: it was about winning every single day leading up to it.
But Dan how do you win every day? First off, winning is a subjective term: it is up to you to define it. Winning can be simply waking up 15mins early to cook a breakfast before work. Winning can be complimenting the girl you have a crush on in one of your classes. Winning could be convincing yourself to go to the gym. Winning can be doing leg day….more than once a month… It is up to you to decide what winning really is.
If you decide winning isn’t the culmination, but rather, the process of obtaining your goals, you can achieve anything.
Okay that sounds all well and good, but how do I even begin?
It’s all about mindset. Literally everything in life requires practice and patience to establish. Your mindset is included in this. We train our minds, and thus our perspectives, to respond to different things differently. One individual can place 3rd in a race and be upset he didn’t get first. Another individual can place 3rd and be ecstatic for getting such a high placement. The difference between the two people is mindset.
I’m not saying one is better than the other, but one mindset offers an increasing number of chances to win every day, while the other is focused on a singular win.
The person who got 3rd place and was happy with it shaped their training around this: “The only competition I have is myself. I just want to do better. Regardless of where I place, I want to wake up the next morning knowing I brought everything I had to the table. If I gave it my all, then I don’t care what the result is”. This person’s mindset is structured around personal growth and development. It is not indicative of placement or anyone else in the race.
At the end of the day, it only matters if that person trained and prepared every day to improve himself. That person won long before he crossed the finish line.
That makes a lot of sense. Okay how do I create a new mindset for myself?
In the famous lyrics from the esteemed DJ Khaled: “Win, win, win no matter what”.
To define winning, we first need to establish your goals. These goals come in three different sizes- short term, long term, and overarching vision.
Short term goals are your day to day goals- obtaining these is going to lay your foundation for “winning everyday”. These goals could, but are not restricted to, going to the gym 3 days this week, preparing 2 meals a day this week, sleeping 8 hours a night this week, etc. They are the ones that SHOULD be easily obtainable: do not make these goals lofty. We want your mindset to shift to constantly winning and achieving. This starts with the small and easy things.
Long term goals are over a one, three, or six month period. These goals are what the small goals work up to. For example, if your short term goal is going to the gym 3 times a week (every week you prepare goals), then your long term goal could be adding 20lbs to your bench after 3 months of this routine. We build into the long term goals. They should be a reward for all your efforts everyday obtaining the short term goals.
The final goal type is an overarching vision. This goal type is supposed to be lofty, but obtainable given a significant amount of time working towards it. Using our previous example, an overarching vision would be entering a powerlifting meet with your now improved bench.
Picture this vision as the finish line. Something you would obtain naturally by completing the race. And the race begins with the first step- winning your first day.
Take a minute and write down 3 short term goals for the week, 2 long term goals- 1 and 3 month, and an overarching vision with no time table.
With these, you’re already beginning to win today.
